Step Stool

£650.00

A helping hand, thoughtfully made.

Crafted entirely by hand in my York workshop, this solid elm step stool is designed to be as beautiful as it is useful. Every leg is individually shaped with hand tools, every joint carefully fit, and every surface softened by hand to invite touch.

The gently rounded top lightens the form while remaining reassuringly sturdy underfoot. Finished with a satin hard wax oil, the elm's natural grain is brought quietly to life, creating a finish that is both durable and a pleasure to live with.

Whether it's reaching a high shelf, giving little ones a safe boost, or serving as a side or occasional table, it's a piece made for everyday use and built to become part of the home for many years to come.

Quality takes time. Every piece is made to order with a lead time of 4 – 6 weeks.

Design

This stool was designed with quiet restraint. The focus was on refining proportion, softening edges, and allowing each detail to earn its place.

The gently bevelled top serves two purposes. Visually, it lightens the solid elm seat, giving the piece a more refined silhouette. Practically, it creates a comfortable edge to grip when lifting and moving the stool from place to place.

The individually hand-shaped legs lend a subtle sense of movement. The square profile at their widest flows into a gentle round taper, introducing quiet definition whilst remaining soft to the touch.

Visible wedged tenons celebrate the honesty of traditional joinery, expressing how the piece is made rather than concealing it. The result is a step stool that is reassuringly sturdy, comfortable to use, and equally at home as a side or occasional table.

Nothing has been added simply for decoration. Each detail exists to make the stool stronger, more comfortable, or more enjoyable to live with.

Finish

This step stool is finished with Osmo Polyx-Oil, a hard wax oil chosen for its balance of protection and natural beauty. It resists everyday wear, water, and even the odd coffee spill while remaining simple to repair should it ever need a touch-up.

The clear satin sheen gives the elm a gentle glow, warm to the touch and easy on the eye. It enhances the grain beneath rather than covering it, creating a subtle depth and contrast that feels calm and inviting. I chose this finish because it preserves the honesty of the wood. It's durable, natural, and made to last.
