Commissions
Every commissioned piece begins with a conversation; your space, your ideas, and how you want the furniture to feel and function. From there, I sketch, refine, and build each element by hand in my small York workshop, using traditional joinery and honest materials.
Whether it’s a single shelf, a fitted piece, or a one-off heirloom, the aim is the same – to create something considered, personal, and made to last for generations.
Initial Chat
Whether you know what you want or are unsure where to begin, we’ll work together to create a clear design brief.
If you’re near York, meeting in person is a great way to explore ideas and see the space. Otherwise a video call works just as well.
Before we chat, it helps to think about the purpose of the piece, the space it will live in, and what matters most to you – the must-haves and the nice-to-haves. This is also a good time to discuss budget and any time considerations.
Cost Estimate
After the Initial Chat, I’ll produce an estimate for the total cost, including delivery.
For larger or more complex pieces, I may provide an upper and lower bracket to reflect possible variations in the build.
Design Approval
Using the design brief, I’ll create a detailed sketch with annotations to confirm details.
By this stage, everything should be coming together with no surprises. Two further Design Revisions are included to refine the final details.
My priority is that you receive the piece you truly want. If revisions meaningfully increase the complexity or build time, I’ll let you know and adjust the estimate accordingly.
A Design Fee of 20% of the Cost Estimate is payable to produce a sketch for Design Approval.
Woodworking
With the design approved, and a firm Cost Estimate and Delivery Date confirmed, the build begins.
I’ll keep you updated on progress and share behind-the-scenes photos so you can follow along. If you prefer a surprise, I’m happy to save these until delivery!
To begin the Woodworking phase, 50% of the Cost Estimate is payable.
Delivery
The big day approaches!
Smaller items that can be safely packaged will be sent with a specialist courier. Larger pieces will be delivered by me.
Delivery is usually discussed during the Initial Chat and finalised at Design Approval.
The remaining balance is payable before delivery.
Share as much or as little detail as you like in your message. A rough idea is enough, we’ll shape it together.
